Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority Serving Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia Counties
When customers choose to use Regional Rail or any SEPTA service, our goal is to provide the most pleasant travel experience possible. But that is not enough. We also need to provide a safe riding experience and environment. Safety is one of fundamental principles of the transit industry and SEPTA has committed to establish a safety first corporate culture for our employees and customers.
In response to a number of very serious crashes involving commuter and freight carrier rail, the federal government passed the U.S Rail Safety Improvement Act of 2008, with a mandate that many freight lines and all intercity and commuter rail systems install Positive Train Control (PTC) on their systems. They set a deadline of 2015 when this work had to be completed, which was later extended to 2018. Positive Train Control is the next generation of signal safety equipment that works to further reduce the chance of human error.
We are proud to say that SEPTA is one of just a few customer Rail systems in the United States to have PTC operating in revenue service. This potentially lifesaving safety signal system is currently in operation across much of SEPTA controlled operating territory. We have been working closely with Amtrak to test and formulate our plan for the 3 lines - Paoli/Thorndale, Trenton, and Wilmington/Newark - that operate exclusively on their right of way complete to begin operating with PTC in the first half of 2017.
